The Costs of Different Roofing Materials
Different roofing materials cost different amounts of money. We’ll discuss the average costs of the most commonly used materials below.
Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are the most commonly used roofing material in existence. Low-maintenance and easy to install, they can cost as little as $1.50 per square foot and as much as $5 per square foot.
Cedar Shakes
Cedar shakes are wood blocks that are staggered on top one of another. Durable and strong, they add a great deal of dimension to a roof. Generally speaking, they cost between $8 and $12 per square foot.
Metal Panels
Metal panels are durable, low-maintenance, easy to install, and aesthetically pleasing. Note, though, that they can make a little noise. Most metal roofing costs between $6.50 and $10 per linear foot and lasts for up to 70 years, meaning that it provides tons of bang for its buck.
Tiles
Another option is clay or cement tiles. These last for over 100 years and require almost no maintenance whatsoever. Most tiles cost between $18 and $25 per square foot, which is expensive initially, but actually quite affordable when stretched out over the years.
Slate
The most durable of all roofing materials is slate. Slate is essentially just shaped stone that’s made to look like shingles. It’s known not only for its extreme durability (150 to 200 years and more of use) but for its regal aesthetic as well.
As you might expect, slate roofing is on the expensive side. Generally speaking, it costs between $22 and $30 per square foot. Note, though, that it provides tremendous bang for its buck.
